If you own a successful website, then it may attract trouble makers. Posting spam, harassing people on community forums and even trying to steal personal user information off your website are just some of the things they are notorious for. A neat way to keep them away is to block their IP addresses. Although, some people may use fake or dynamic IP’s, blocking them is a good start.
How cPanel can Help
Here’s how you can do that using cPanel:
- Login to cPanel
- Click “IP deny manager” in the security tab
- Enter the IP address you want to block
- Click “add”
Make sure the IP address you have typed is the one you want to block. The address will stay blocked unless you decide to remove it from the list. You can also block an entire series of addresses. For example:
01.02.03.04-01.02.03.08
You can also block fully qualified domain names (FBQD) along with IP addresses. Whenever you feel like unblocking a domain or an IP, click “x” under the remove tab.
We’ve already mentioned that a blocked IP address will have no access to your website unless the user takes a detour or you decide to remove it from the black list. The address will remain blocked if it is the only one used. Otherwise, this solution will stay in effect for a limited period of time. However, permanent solutions may require some extra security measures.
