How To: Find the Right Web Hosting Service Provider

The number of web hosting providers has grown enormously and the increased competition has brought down the cost of web hosting quite considerably. There are even free hosting services these days that will cost you absolutely nothing. These free hosts may provide you with a limited amount of space and less options available but are worth considering if your site is fairly simple and only consists of a few pages. Free web hosting services do vary though, some may actually allow you more space than you ever need but with little or no technical support, or some may require you to place advertising on the sites for them. It’s a good idea to shop around as there are many hosts that provide different packages for both free and budget hosting services.

For a personal or small business site, a free or cheap low cost hosting may be all that you ever require. Whether you decide to use a free hosting service, budget hosting package or even a more expensive option such as dedicated hosting there are important things to consider when it comes to choosing a host.

The host you choose needs to be able to support your site and the programming language that you used. For more complicated, interactive sites it’s a good idea to check with the host first of all to see whether they already host a similar site. Why not ask them for an example? They could easily e-mail you the domain name of a site on one of their servers. Providing the host with the details of your site and how it was built will allow them to assess quickly whether they can handle it without any difficulty. Most reliable hosts should be able to deal with anything you throw at them, but the inexperienced ones may have trouble and this could mean any problems that may arise taking longer to get fixed.

A good host should communicate with you within a short time frame. If you fail to get an answer to your initial queries or they seem to lack in professionalism, go somewhere else. Ideally, you want to be able to get support 24 hours a day, from real people that know what they are doing.

You will also want to think carefully about how your site will look in the future. If it is your intention to develop the site to allow more interactivity and allow people to buy things from your site, you will need to make sure your host can support these additional requirements. Check to see that the host can provide secure sites, SMTP e-mail services and sub-domains. You may not need them right away but they could be essential at a later time, possibly sooner than you think.
