IBM made an announcement on Monday, stating they had managed to acquire the Toronto based cloud management software, Platform Computing. The software is capable of handling clusters and grids for various computing environments. This marks the second time IBM managed to buy a cloud management software company this month; it was only last week the organization bought testing cloud solutions software, Green Hat.
According to the company, Platform Computing was acquired to facilitate computing environments utilized in data intensive features like simulations, analytics etc. Applications driven by such high performing computing software have the ability to speed up infrastructure growth, product development and facilitate innovative discoveries in digital media, oil and gas industry, educational industry etc.
According to Platform Computing, they currently possess more than 2,000 customers, 23 of which are considered the top 30 organizations in the world. On this matter, General Manager of IBM Systems Software, Helene Armitage, opined, “The acquisition of Platform Computing will help accelerate IBM’s growth in smarter computing – a key initiative in IBM’s Smarter Planet strategy – by extending the reach of our HPC offerings into the high growth segment of technical computing. Our intent is to enable clients to uncover insights from growing volumes of data so they can take actions that optimize business results.”
IBM has plans to merge the software with its own systems, in order to assist business clients who wish to migrate to technical computing.
