Placing your site on several different web directories can help you become noticed by the search engines or improve your positioning if you are already in them. This is something that people have been doing since there started to be an influx of none geek users surfing the internet. They knew that it would be hard for the average person to be able to find a web site ,that they would be interested in. So different companies started to index the web in the form of directories, Yahoo being the most famous. Now, submitting your web site to directories is becoming in vogue again and we will explain why.
The practice of submitting your web site in this manner has never been non effective, but it has become less popular over the years. There are so many different ways to get your web site noticed now, that the last thing that people think of is to still use old school directory tactics. It is just not something that crosses your mind these days. Whenever you see a new tutorial teaching people how to utilize their SEO efforts, directories are always the last thing to be mentioned. And that is a shame. Search engines still love directories and if you are able to get into a very trusted one, then the search engine will pass the credit back to your site.
There are still many directories that are out there which you can submit your site to. If you do not want to do it yourself, then there are plenty of people who run services that will do it for you. They will have a couple of people, whose jobs it is to submit your web site to directories all day. And it must be done in a careful manner. Google and other search engines do not like it when they see a new site get a bunch of back links in a short period of time. They think that someone is spamming the links to make their site look good. Make sure that whoever post up your links, do not do a large amount in one day. If they do, then your link building efforts through directories will be over before it even started. The one thing that helps in cases such as this, is when you submit to a directory, you have to wait for a moderator to approve you. In some directory’s, that can be one day, in others two weeks. This will hopefully help you avoid getting penalized by Google.
Submitting your web site to web directories is still a valid strategy as long as you do not use that as your only source of traffic. But as long as you mix up, you should see good results from it.
