Innocent Websites Blamed For Phishing After GoogleApis Gets Blocked

A multitude of websites faced the misfortune of being labeled as phishing sites, as OpenDS blocked the script and app online developer, googleapis.com. For three hours, many people visited their favorite sites, only to be encountered with a “phishing site blocked” sign or a 404 error.

The reason for this anomaly was elucidated upon by Brit-Net’s managing director, Matt Bennet; apparently, GoogleApis was blocked due to a concern with its SSL. It was because of this issue that he suggested a relocation to Microsoft’s DNS. One of the members of the forum, awebber, also revealed that this was the first time he had encountered problems with OpenDNS:

“Never considered disabling OpenDNS until today. Especially worrying as our site uses Google CDN and if our users IT teams use OpenDNS our sites won’t work at all,” the post said.

According to OpenDNS, it has removed the domain from its servers in order to investigate why it occurred in the first place. The Support Manager of the company, Daniel Gifford, also told users to empty their cache and their resolver. The company has promised to resolve this serious matter as soon as possible, in order to enable users to get back to their crucial online businesses and other web matters in a timely manner.
