UKFast Web Hosting to Spend $12.4M on Two New Data Centers

Today, UK based web hosting company UKFast announced, it intends to spend $12.4 million on two new data centers that will be launched in Manchester, by next summer. The new additions will prove to be a good expansion for the company’s own network overall.

UKFast launched its third data center, of which it completed ownership, in summers this year, in Trafford Park. It already has two sites in Manchester Science Parks and is originally based in City Tower in Piccadilly Plaza.

Lawrence Jones, UKFast CEO and founder stated, “owning and operating our own data centers acts as an insurance. Other hosting providers have leased premises, and their rents will go up. We will never have that problem, so we can control our costs and pass those savings on to our customers, giving us a competitive advantage. We are planning for 10 years into the future.”

He also said, the company has been seeing profits raised by 103% since last year. The company had a turnover of $6.7 million in 2010, which has grown by 40% in 2011, and the company believes the figure will reach to $37 million in 2012.

The company’s clients include some well known names such as Chelsea FC, Nokia, Barclays, Virgin and Mulberry. There are a total of 143 employees working at UKFast, and the company intends to bring 100 new job openings within the next 18 months.

Google posts minimum requirements for Android 3.0…or does it?

The Gingerbread flavor of Android is taking up quite a chunk of news space these days. It’s all speculation so far, yet many sources claim that Google has set minimum hardware requirements for future phones running Android. Rumors go that all phones will have to have a minimum of 1 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, the works.

However, a major announcement from Andy Rubin, VP of engineering at Google, leaves the validity of these rumors questionable at best. “The down-market opportunity is about to happen,” were the exact words of Mr. Rubin. He goes on to explain that Google is trying to get Android on cheaper devices to target the phone markets of developing nations. This contradicts the high requirements stated above.

Google wants to get phone makers like Huawei and LG to make cheaper phones for countries like India and China, where the majority of users cannot afford $500 phones. These are major markets for Symbian devices, which often sell for as low as $170.

Nokia is connecting people in developing countries

Nokia is fully enjoying a near-monopoly in much of Asia and parts of Europe. Nokia has an average annual revenue of about $52 billion. As recently as 2008, it sold 472 million phones worldwide. Contrast this with Google’s claim that it is now selling about 160,000 Android phones a day. It sounded like a huge figure when it was announced, but do the math and it turns out that it will only sell about 59 million devices this year at that rate. This is much less than what Nokia sells. No wonder Google is feeling envious.

Meanwhile, the Asian countries are not holding their breath. Let’s just say it will be a while before they emerge as a threat to Nokia outside US.
