On Thursday, December 1, Cloud computing technology provider ScaleMatrix issued a press release proclaiming that it had used the platform of CA World 2011 occasion to introduce its “Cloud in a Box” mobile computing platform.

Chief sales and marketing officer Chris Orlando mentioned in the press release that the event could be the best venue to launch the Cloud in a Box.

“In a convention center, you don’t have access to racks, cooling, or infrastructure support – so the Cloud in a Box platform was ideal for housing the extensive infrastructure CA needed to run the CA World show floor and numerous product demonstrations.” Chris Orlando quoted.

Ken Patchett, the manager of Facebook Prineville, Oregon data center criticized Google for keeping their design of their data center a secret stating that withholding it did not bring competitive advantage to a company, stated in a report by Wired.

Patchett left Google for Facebook in April 2010, where he was working as supervisor for the company’s The Dalles, Oregon data center campus.

Commenting on the search engine’s policy he said that it was specified in the Google’s employment agreement that he could not share details about the company’s data center design for at least a year after leaving it.

Although the ‘secrecy’ is a prevailing ‘security’ practice among giant companies in the internet business like Google and Amazon, he considers this kind of ‘secrecy’ pointless stating that this view “doesn’t make sense at all” as there is no competitive advantage to a company concealing  a data center design.

“How servers work has nothing to do with the way your software works and the competitive advantage comes from manipulating your software”, Patchett said.

In April, Facebook introduced the Open Compute Project initiative and shared its Prineville data center’s custom-engineered design that features its energy efficient machines. These were responsible for lowering the temperature of the facility instead of electricity intensive water chillers.

The ground-breaking technology has helped the company to achieve efficiency in power usage to a considerable extent in comparison to other data centers.

In one of the blogs, Facebook Inc. issued mechanical CAD files and technical requirements of its Prineville data center’s building plan, backup systems, servers, power supplies, server racks and battery pack systems. .

Patchett mentioned “the reason I came to Facebook is that they wanted to be open.” He appreciates the openness of Facebook Inc. stating that many other companies that he has worked with did not allow anyone from outside to access the facility. “Here [at Facebook], my children have seen this data center. My wife has seen this data center…. We’ve had some people say, ‘Can we build this data center?’ And we say, ‘Of course, you can. Do you want the blueprints?”

Search engines will see them as separate entities and you can accomplish the same SEO results with a sub-domain as you can with separate domains.
