Europeans Migrate to Cloud Services

According to a study conducted by One.com, more and more Europeans are opting for online storage options nowadays. Apparently, 63% of Britishers prefer Cloud Drives for their online business, while 40% of Belgians make use of such services on a daily basis. It was also discovered, that most of them prefer secure services over vulnerable ones when it comes to data storage options.

Research also revealed that almost 68% of online storage consisted of saved images, 50% comprised of work files while 44% were personal documents. Surprisingly, only 32% of audio files and 29% of video files, were discovered stored in Cloud Drives.

“A few years ago we witnessed a different picture, with only a few important work and private files stored in personal clouds. Hackers Prevail in Stealing Web Hosting Customer Passwords

Incidents with hackers intent on stealing database info regarding customer passwords, have become quite prevalent these days. Such was the unfortunate case with web host DreamHost, whose database was recently breached by nefarious users. Although databases such as these comprise of sensitive information (like client credentials and passwords), they are less secure as many seem to think when compared to PII ones.

The massive DreamHost hacking incident saw the theft of a large number of its FTP credentials belonging to its shared hosting accounts. The hackers had a field day when they discovered a legacy table with clear text passwords stored within it.

“This particular breached database contained customer credentials to the FTP server. This allows potential hackers to use these credentials in order to impersonate customers when accessing the FTP server,” Noa Bar-Yosef, Senior Security Strategist, Imperva says. “The impact of which is to access customer documents, download the documents and even upload their own documents.”

Additionally, web hosts were also advised to keep a closer eye on their database storage systems. Failure to do so may result in massive hacking incidents similar to the one DreamHost recently suffered from.

“To secure user passwords, companies need to put in a strong password policy as well as digesting the passwords before encryption. Hackers are notorious for breaking encrypted passwords very quickly. The point here is to make their job more difficult,” she says. “This includes not only the banning of common passwords, but also banning keyboard sequences. Using passphrases instead of passwords is also a good practice since they provide the necessary length to prevent effective brute-forcing of passwords.”

Some experts believe that more should be done besides providing advice regarding password storage options. According to them, hacks can be prevented altogether if web hosting companies refrain from hiding passwords within an unsecure storage database. Many developers scatter passwords within a weak database after they invent a new app. In other words, by trying to re-vamp hosting services, they inadvertently weaken their own infrastructure.

Congress Delays SOPA and PIPA Verdict

The SOPA and PIPA debacle took on a new turn as Congress postponed its decision regarding the two anti-piracy bills. The notorious laws had been created to crack down on pirated material online once and for all.

According to Harry Reid, a Senate Democrat leader, “In light of recent events, I have decided to postpone Tuesday’s vote on the PROTECT I.P. Act,” Reid said on Friday. This sentiment was echoed by Lamar Smith, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, who revealed that he will not take a vote on SOPA unless “there is wider agreement on a solution.”

As several web surfers know by now, multiple renowned websites such as WordPress, Wikipedia, Mozilla, Google etc. were quite verbal with their disapproval regarding these two laws. In fact, their continued protest (in the form of blackouts) led almost 18 senators to take back their support of the anti-piracy laws.

Anti-PIPA/SOPA groups such as Save Hosting Coalition and Engine Advocacy have also been quite active in their protests. Many have urged people to utilize a call tool to contact government officials to veto the bill.  A video has also been released which showcases possible disastrous outcomes if the bills were to be passed.

NetCoalition also presided over a press conference recently to review events held against the bills. Incidentally, several Coalition parties like Carpathia Hosting, FortressITX and ServInt held a meeting with government personnel from the Senate and Congress, to discuss the issue.
