According to a site editor, Jonathan Riggal, “Megaupload was always going to get taken down — far too flagrant publication of copyrighted material. I think sharing on the Web is great, and I don’t care if it’s copyrighted material — but Megaupload and some similar sites are making loads of money out of making it possible for people to view pirated stuff. Of course they will be targeted as they are blatantly breaking laws.”

On the other hand, Mega Upload attorney, Ira Rothken, blatantly denies these accusations, “We believe that the allegations are without merit and Megaupload is going to vigorously defend against the case.”

Currently, the United States government has snagged almost $50 million worth of assets from the company, a sum it has earned consistently since 2005, owing to several copyright violations. This includes vintage and state-of-the-art cars such as Mercedes-Benz, Maserati and even a Lamborghini from one of the seven accused personnel.

Reliance Communications Blocks Websites to ‘Fight’ Piracy

The internet is the first thing people access in the morning as they get up for work; living without this entity seems akin to a lost limb to many of them. This was the feeling the Reliance Communications customers felt when they found themselves unable to access major file-hosting websites two days before Christmas.

As Indians across the country tried to use their broadband communication, they were faced with a message saying ‘this site has been blocked’ along with a copyright claim by the company. What makes this incident unprecedented is the fact that only the Department of Information Technology has the rightful authority to block websites in the country.

“Since Friday morning I can’t access any file-hosting websites. Not all web users are pirates. We share legitimate files through websites like Megaupload and Filesonic. Like photographs we have clicked. Blocking of websites is ridiculous,” said Gaurav Shukla, editor of AndroidOS.in and someone who has been a customer for the company for half a year now. However, using ISP networks, customers could access the same websites which were blocked by Reliance Communications.

According to a statement given by Reliance Entertainment, the blockage was initiated due to the release of the Don 2 movie. A John Doe order was taken from a Delhi court by the company in order to protect the flick from piracy. (A John Doe act refers to a court injunction provided to be used against hidden or unknown offenders).

Reliance Entertainment personnel were asked to clarify the reason for the blockage by the TOI via email and phone calls, both which have yet to be answered. According to Pranesh Prakash, (a senior official at Centre for Internet and Society), the act to block websites is an illegal move itself. Not only is it wrong for a number of reasons, but the websites can be blamed themselves:

“Yes, there is a John Doe order. But Reliance Communications seems to have misinterpreted it. If the judge, who gave the order, comes to know about how it has been used, I am sure he will disagree. So far, there is no evidence that members at the blocked file-hosting websites had indulged in piracy of Don 2. It’s purely speculative. It is like shutting down a public library just because someone may go there and leave a book about bomb making,” he said.

Mac Mini Vault, a colocation provider, experimented with Apple TV using it as a web server. Following the experiment, its blog post claimed “the surprising result was that nothing crashed, nothing died, nothing even got warm to the touch.” What started off as a tweet into a full 24 hour experiment visited by almost 15,000 people.

Apple in a statement made last year said it plans to cancel its XServe line from January 31, 2011. The Mac Mini Vault blog also stated that the Apple TV functioned lighttpd. The page used for the experiment was a rigid version of the company’s site and was made clean of the useless CSS and JavaScript, adding that the CPU load remained under 2.11.

To keep a record of the traffic, Google Analytics tracking code was used on the page which worked with the help of one more javascript based tracking that recorded a total number of 250 visitors to the site continuously during the experiment.

The traffic reached a high point of 7.68 Mbps and stayed on around 2 to 3 Mbps for the remaining length of the experiment.

Mac Mini Vault conducted the experiment in an office instead of a data center, and said “the consumer-level router seemed to be one of the bottlenecks” experienced.

Mac Mini Vaults also claimed that if the experiment was carried out in a data center before tweeting, it would have been more successful. Also had the web page been enhanced and the javascript and CSS reduced, the test would have gone even better. The company thinks the reason the experiment was so successful is the single static HTML page, on which the Apple TV’s flash storage and iOS was stored
