Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system was a major disappointment for everyone. A lot of good phones were hogged down by the old design and inefficiency of this mobile OS. It doesn’t have support for new features like capacitive screens, multi-touch, touch typing and gestures, and it was originally created for use with a stylus (and most modern smartphones running WinMo 6.5 don’t come with one). In one word, it was (and still is) OLD.

Microsoft said that their next mobile OS, Windows Phone 7 will be a totally new design, created from the ground up, and nobody believed them, because, well… it’s Microsoft, the company that almost forcibly replaced the good old Windows XP with a slower, less efficient resource hog named Vista.

Everyone was expecting the same to happen for Windows Mobile 7. And the fact that its release was being delayed over and over again certainly didn’t help things. But, when Microsoft released Windows 7 (the desktop OS), everyone turned their attention towards them again. Windows 7 was what it should’ve been: a faster, lighter (compared to Vista), improved and more advanced operating system. The enterprise sector and users accepted it as an acceptable, even great replacement for Windows XP, something they’ve never done with Vista.

And people started thinking: what if Windows Mobile 7 is the same – innovative, fast and with support for the latest features. Their interest kept rising, and when the new Windows Phone 7 (its real name) was released, everyone said and thought: Yes, this is the most innovative OS on the market.

So, let’s see what new, innovative and exceptional features it has that make it a serious competitor and a great comeback of Microsoft into the mobile operating systems market.

Hubs: Hubs are a core part of Windows Phone 7, and they’re very important in defining the whole operating system. With hubs, you have all of the content in a specific category in one place, where you can easily access it. For example, there’s a music hub in the form of the Zune app, which contains all the music you bought in Zune AND the music you have stored on your phone’s memory. So, in Windows Phone 7 you can access your music using individual apps AND have it in a central location, if it’s more convenient. And that’s not limited to only music. For example, you can have all your Excel, Word, PDF and other files associated with office use in the business hub. This makes it very easy to store and search through information.

Tiles: An innovative feature on Microsoft’s part, the tiles are a replacement for the usual icons found in other operating systems like iPhone and Android. And they’re not simply static, either. They all show and represent what’s happening inside (they can show that you’ve got a new comment, email, that a new person is online in Skype – and you see almost all of it at once, without navigating anywhere). Of course, Android and iPhone have Push notifications, but they’re not as stylishly integrated into the core as the Windows Phone 7 tiles.

Apps: For any operating system, whether it’s mobile or for desktop computers, third party applications and extensions are what dictate the number of users that it will have. If there are no apps, users won’t buy your OS, because they wouldn’t have anything to do with it. The apps demonstrated at the Windows Phone 7 launch event were very well designed. They were stylish, yet functional, with no extra stuff that no one needs. A lot of big names have already stated that they will launch apps for W7P, and that is a good first step towards assuring users that they won’t be left with no useful apps. The Marketplace (which will be launched soon, with its own payment processor and account system) is designed so that developers will offer only a “Try before you buy” method. This means you get the full application, test it, and buy it if you like it or delete it if you don’t like it. No confusing Lite/Pro apps here. This may be bad for some, but it’s good for the enterprise and consumers who want a clearly regulated marketplace and business model.

Games: In this area, developers have demonstrated something truly amazing: a game that ran on the Xbox, Windows 7 (Desktop) AND the Windows Phone 7. Yes, the games can be cross-platform and you can play them anywhere, as standalone or using your Live account (with the stats recorded there, obviously). This is essentially what Sony tried to achieve with the PSP/PS3 setup, but failed. Microsoft developers promise that they will succeed, and we sure hope so!

Mesh: This is Microsoft’s (and not only theirs) plan to unite all your devices and data into one “cloud” of information, which can seamlessly be accessed and operated from any device, be it your laptop, desktop computer, or mobile device. Microsoft will be the provider of all the services: Email, Games, Music, Movies, Search, Maps, and many others. Just like Google does with their Apps Suite (Calendar, Search, Docs, etc.). But Microsoft may succeed with Windows Phone 7 where Google and Apple failed with their Android and iPhone, respectively.

Microsoft has certainly been releasing successful products one after another in this last year, and Windows Phone 7 just continues the trend. Let’s hope they’ll come up with even better stuff in the future. For now, I can say that Windows Phone 7 is definitely going to be a serious contender for the mobile OS space, along with Android and iPhone.

No matter which Windows version you use, you’ll find your computer slowing down after a couple of months of regular use. It holds true for the most recent incarnation as well – Windows 7.

2: Check Startup Programs
The typical cause of slowdown is software that immediately runs after Windows 7 starts and keeps on running in the background using up precious system memory and CPU cycle.

The easiest way to detect which apps are running when you start your PC is to see the notification area. If you click the up arrow, the hidden icons will be shown. Uninstall any applications you don’t need, or adjust their settings to prevent them from being run in the background,

It is better to use an internal tool called msconfig, from the Start menu, type in ‘msconfig’ in the search box. When the utility is run, choose Startup tab and check each entry. If you see a program that you don’t need, uncheck it to disallow it from running at startup. It doesn’t uninstall apps from your computer; it only forbids them from automatically opened at startup.
More advanced users may use the ‘Autoruns for Windows’ utility downloadable from the Microsoft site. It would be adequate for monitoring all services and startup programs in your system.

3: Adjust Visual Effects
An attractive Windows environment isn’t the fastest Windows. After awhile those pretty effects may not be too interesting any longer, adjust visual effects to gain better performance from your machine. In Control Panel, go to for ‘Performance’ and choose ‘Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows’ in the System category.
Then make a custom selection or choose the’ Adjust for best performance option’.

4: Adjust Indexing Options
Windows always indexes locations and drives where it thinks you often search for files. You should fine-tune this setting by telling Windows to only index drives and locations where you often search. In Control Panel, go to Indexing>Indexing Options>Modify.
Then click ‘Show all locations’ button. Uncheck locations where you infrequently search, and click OK.

5: Set Power Settings
Windows 7 uses ‘Balanced’ as the default power management setting, sacrificing performance to conserve power. If you’re not concerned with power consumption and battery usage, then change the setting to maximum performance.

6: Turn off Sounds
You can disable unneeded Windows sounds to squeeze a little more performance. Go to Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Change system sounds>choose ‘No Sounds’>uncheck ‘Play Windows Startup sound’ then click OK.

7: Tweak Windows Services
This is for more advanced users. Windows Services provide critical OS functions and run in the background. However, most users won’t need all default Services. Since each Services uses up system resources, determining which Services run at startup will help in speeding up Windows 7. You can adjust the settings by typing services.msc in the Start>Search box.
All Services can be set to Disabled (can’t be started), Manual (start when needed) or Automatic (auto-start at boot). But which Services should you remove? Visit ‘http://www.blackviper.com/Windows_7/servicecfg.htm’ and it is recommended to use the ‘Safe’ configuration to gain the highest performance safely.

8: Other Methods To Improve Performance

Original: Eight SureFire Ways to Speed Up Windows 7 Easily

It’s really bad when you have all your important data and documents on one computer and then, one beautiful day, the operating system just decides to stop booting. For your information, this happens not only with Windows, but with Mac OS X, too; and I’m not even talking about Linux, where one deleted file can cause all the system to crash (though it’s much easier to restore/reinstall than the other two).

So, when it happens, you can’t access your files and you can’t work. The only thing left to do is reinstall the OS. But what if you need the files, fast?
There is a very good solution. Unfortunately, it will not work if your computer’s operating system is already broken, but I hope you have a spare computer (and you’re reading this on it now). The other thing you’ll need is an USB flash drive, preferably bigger than the size of the data you need to copy or an online backup account (though the latter will be very slow and you’ll still need a 1GB flash drive).

After you have these, you can follow the steps below to get your files off the broken PC (and copy them to another one or just leave them on the flash drive). Basically, you’ll use a Linux LiveUSB (the operating system runs straight from the USB drive, no need to install it) to start your computer and copy your files to the flash drive.

1. Insert your flash drive and format it, then download UNetbootin from http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ and run the program (you don’t need to install it). Select Ubuntu (the best Linux OS, it works perfectly), select a version (8.04 or lower is best for old computers made before 2007, 9.04 and higher is for newer ones), make sure your flash drive is selected below and click OK. The utility will automatically download and install Ubuntu Linux to your USB drive (I assume your Internet connection speed is 1mb/s or higher).

2. After it’s finished, click “restart now”. Don’t unplug the USB drive. You should go into BIOS and check that the USB drive has priority (is the first on the list in a tab that’s named “Boot priority” or something like that). Press ESC and select save settings. Now at restart, your computer will boot from the USB drive into Ubuntu Linux. It isn’t much different from Windows. Click on “Places->Computer” and it’ll open your computer. Now, your files are located on a hard drive labeled “XX GB media”, just double click it and copy what you need to “Filesystem”, which is your flash drive.

3. After you copied the files, all you need to do is click the power button in the top right corner and select “Shut Down”, then wait a few seconds until it says “press Enter to shutdown” and press Enter (you could also just unplug the flash drive after you copied your stuff, but you’d risk damaging it). Now you can copy them to another computer or have them safely stored until you reinstall the operating system.

An alternative would be to insert a blank DVD and select “CD/DVD Creator” in Ubuntu. This would allow you to copy your files from the hard drive to one or more DVD’s or CD’s, but you’d still have to have at least 5 GB free on the flash drive for the disc burner cache. A second alternative is opening Firefox in Ubuntu and copying your files to an online backup account (at Dropbox, Box.net, Carbonite or other similar service). A free or trial one will suffice if you plan on downloading them somewhere else immediately. The drawback in this case is that it might take a lot of time to upload your data, depending on your connection speed and the size of the files.

I hope this small tutorial will help you when you need it. The best way to avoid having to do any of the above is maintaining backup copies on DVD’s, a flash drive, external hard drive or remote server/backup account (Microsoft’s SkyDrive could do it, too).
