href="http://www.websitehosting.com">Website Hosting)

Firewalls are the ultimate security gate to prevent unauthorized access to your computer or web server. Wikipedia best defines a firewall as “a device or set of devices designed to permit or deny network transmissions based upon a set of rules and is frequently used to protect networks from unauthorized access while permitting legitimate communications to pass.”

Malevolent viruses and worms that wreak havoc on operating systems have the potential to infect not only your computer, but also hijack it to spread malicious attacks on to contacts in your e-mail address book or other users on the same server. Fortunately, firewalls act as a cyber filter to allow safe connections and block those with questionable objectives. As a website owner, it’s imperative to install and maintain a firewall not only to protect your personal data, but also that of anyone else that you interact with online.

Windows Firewall

Windows users can rest assured that the software giant strives to protect its clients. Windows Firewall is the default firewall in virtually every version of the popular operating system. If you’re unsure as to whether or not the firewall is on, complete the following steps to check the status:

Click Start

Click Control Panel

Type firewall in the search box

Click Windows Firewall

Click Turn Windows Firewall on/off (found on the left pane)

Click Turn on Windows Firewall under each network location

Click OK

The general setting for Windows Firewall should be that it’s on for every network location including home, work, public or domain. The firewall should also be on for each network connection. Additionally, the firewall should block every inbound connection with the exception of those you specifically authorize.

Free Firewall Software

There’s a plethora of firewall and security software readily available for download at no charge to users. Such downloadable programs include: robust firewall program, security patches, anti-malware, ad blockers, e-mail anti- phishing tools, PC registry cleaners, anti-theft protection and software that unearths the buried “gotchas” in end user license agreements.

Caveat! Users should never install a new firewall without first uninstalling the default firewall. Always use the firewall’s vendor uninstall feature to remove the existing program or opt to use Window’s Add/Remove Program option to completely delete it from your system.

Firewall Limitations

Although advanced firewalls are able to filter connections based on connection attributes such as source IP addresses, destination IP addresses, destination service, protocols, TTL values, and netblock of the originator, firewalls also have limitations.

One security loophole of firewalls is when viruses are attached to an e-mail. Due to the fact that firewalls can’t discern the contents of an e-mail message, it’s impossible for a firewall to protect users from attachments containing a virus. Anti-virus programs that scan and delete suspicious content should also be used in combination with a firewall. Also, never open an attachment from an unknown sender or click on a suspicious link.

Phishing is another concern that firewalls aren’t able to completely protect users. It’s virtually impossible to safeguard against phishing attacks because again, firewalls can’t determine if an e-mail is legit or not,. Phishing is a huge security concern as Fortune 500 companies are routinely victims of phishing. Common sense and a good eye are the most effective tools for combating phishing attempts.

Conclusion

Firewalls are essential for the daily operations of securing both personal computers and online ventures from cyber intruders with malicious intent. Firewalls are easy to manage for novice users and offer a heighten sense of security even for multi-million dollar endeavors.

Related posts:

<a

All wall-posts, news feeds and links uploaded by users and their friends are consistently monitored. When some suspicious malware is tracked, MyPageKeeper warns the users and allows them to remove that content from their profiles.

“Facebook is the new web. Hackers have realized this, and they have started using it to distribute malware and conduct identity theft”, says Md. Sazaddur Rahman, graduate student at UCR. “Facebook provides a fertile ground to spread malware, since users trust links and posts seemingly from their friends.”

“StopTheHacker is very pleased to partner with UCR in this effort, as it is a natural fit for the company”, says Dr. Anirban Banerjee (PhD UCR), co-founder of StopTheHacker. “StopTheHacker is a security startup, that spun off from UCR’s Network and Security lab with the mission to “make the Internet safer one website at a time”, as is their trademark.

This application is being used by scores of people already. Even though the application is at present in beta mode, it’s giving users a great deal of protection as well as the power to manage the ever increasing Facebook spam and malware.

About Stopthehacker:

A well known website security service company, Stopthehacker offers SaaS services to cater to the needs of website owners, administrators and web designers. href="http://www.websitehosting.com">Website Hosting)

If you run an online business then one of the most important factors for you should be making sure that your site is secure at all times. Every day and sometimes every hour, new threats emerge that can do serious damage to your online business. This is why web hosting security is so crucial to making sure you and your customers are protected. While you are working diligently everyday to provide your customers with the absolute best service possible there is someone out there who is working just as hard to hack into your site and bypass your security. There are many levels of undesirable effects that come from hacker attacks. They range from being nothing more than a minor annoyance to being major security breaches that allow you become the victim of things like identity theft. In addition, major holes in your web hosting security can even cause you to be subject to arrest for something they/you did not do.

Battling Invisible Demons

The worst aspect of hackers and online security threats is that you cannot see, touch or feel them. They come like a thief in the night and take you completely by surprise if you are ill prepared for them. Many people envision hackers to be geeks or teenagers sitting at the keyboard working fervently to get into their files and databases. In reality this is not even close to what the world of hacking looks like. Hackers use a variety of automated bots and tools to break through your security measures. Applications which can work thousands of times faster than humans are used and this is why it is so easy to become a target/victim. Unfortunately, your system can be hi-jacked without even the first sign to you. In fact, everyone, even personal computer users are prone to malicious attacks and threats. A good method of web hosting security will make sure that you are ready at all times for any threat that may try to infiltrate your site.

Online Virus Mutation and Resistance

Just like viruses that attack our bodies, online viruses are ever changing and mutating. Because of this they can develop super strength and become extremely hard to fight. In order to make sure that your PC is safe from viruses it is important to be certain that your web hosting company has all the latest tools and virus definitions in place. If virus definitions are not updated everyday, maybe even multiple times per day then there is a good chance that new and mutated forms of computer viruses will go undetected. Always be sure that you pick a web hosting company that takes security seriously and has their protection updated on a continual basis.

What Your Hosting Company is Capable Of

Just about 90% of all web masters actually have a third party hosting their sites. Because of this it is vital to understand that hosting companies are not all created equally. The economy has hit everyone hard, even web hosting companies constantly have to lay off employees and make budget cuts. For this reason certain web hosting companies may not have the ability or staff to fight off the many threats that seek to invade your site through cyber space. If you are running an online business then choosing to least expensive hosting company may not be the best option for you. Remember, in most aspects of life you get what you pay for. The same can be said when it comes to web hosting and the security measures they are capable of taking to protect you.

Click Stealing: A Very Dangerous Threat

There are so many dangerous threats out there that it would be impossible to list them all. However, among one of the most serious concerns is a practice called “click stealing”. This occurs when a hacker places a link over the top of one of the buttons on your site which will redirect traffic toward them. This may be very annoying when it occurs but when there are important financial details involved then it can be absolutely devastating. Imagine going to your online bank account to make a payment and having a redirect link take you somewhere else. This could cause you to enter sensitive information to a form that has been created by people with the intent of doing you harm. This is why it is so important to talk to your prospective web hosting company to find out what type of security they have in place to protect your site from “click stealing”.

Beware of Disgruntled Employees

Another major threat that you may be exposed to if you run a business with employees is that you are probably using employees that are quite experienced when it comes to technical matters. This means that if you do not generate new passwords and make sure that they are locked out 100% then they can return and do very damaging things to your site. Fortunately, this is not as common as the practice of “click stealing but it is still a threat and should be taken seriously.

Related posts:

Clix

Technical advancements such as the widespread use of the internet provide numerous facilities to users but they also have certain disadvantages which make their use very difficult. The biggest disadvantage that can be attributed to the internet is the massive and rapid spread of viruses and spyware programs. These viruses destroy a perfectly healthy computer like biological viruses destroy life form. They spread throughout the computer in the same way viruses spread in living creatures and cause various malfunctions intended to destroy the host.

The internet is not the only source of transfer of these viruses. Popular removable disks such as USB flash memory disks are a common medium for the transfer of these viruses and malicious programs. The virus spread methodology is basically very simple. If a virus is present in some computer and a removable disk is connected to this system, then the virus creates a copy of itself on the disk and whenever that disk is connected to some other system, the virus again creates a copy of itself on that system. Thus, the virus keeps on spreading across systems.

Prevention from these viruses and other malicious programs is very essential for smooth running of the computer system. These viruses can cause temporary as well as permanent damage to the computer system which might result in hardware failure, data loss, corruption of valuable data, leaking of personal information and many other such problems. As medications are needed for prevention and cure of biological viruses, some tools or specific “software” are required for the prevention and cure of computer viruses. These tools should be able to prevent a virus from spreading within the system and should also be able to clean and delete the virus.

These preventative programs are called antivirus software packages. A number of companies develop different kinds of antivirus programs which have a unique algorithm to search and destroy malicious programs and viruses. The virus information database of these software packages is updated as frequently as possible to enable them to detect new viruses and malicious programs. The ratings for the best antivirus software program are subject to continuous change. It’s a tough competition market and the antivirus program with the largest virus database and efficient algorithm for detection and prevention of virus attacks wins the market. There are number of popular antivirus programs that include Norton, Kaspersky, Bit Defender, NOD32, MacAfee etc, but in order to select the best antivirus software, you need to read top antivirus software reviews.

To keep your precious computer system or network secure, you should keep tags on the latest news relating to antivirus programs. The best way is to keep on reading reviews of the latest editions of these antivirus software packages so that any change or improvement in algorithm of a particular program is not left unnoticed. Only by this method, you would be able to keep a standalone computer system or an entire network safe from these virus attacks. For instance, if a new version of a popular antivirus, let’s say a new version of webroot antivirus, is made available; then you should read webroot antivirus review of the latest version to get a picture of the new improvement and their effect. Protecting your computers from virus attacks is very important and a little prevention can save you from a disaster

Related posts:

Website Hosting)

Computer Viruses & Worms! These are the most dreaded words which strike fears into a users heart! Definitely harmful for the home PCs, but the financial damage caused is minimal when it compared with the destruction that is caused to an organization or a company. The data stored in disks have become really valuable such that even the minute loss of it can cost you millions of dollars.

These are the few computer viruses from the past that are classified as the worst ever in the industry.

1.) Morris

Morris, named after Robert Tappan Morris, created the virus in 1988. It was one of the first viruses reported in the world. Actually it was coded to find the size of the Internet. The error that he made in the code made the harmless worm into a deadly one which caused a loss between $10 million – $100 million US dollars. Morris, presently the Professor of Cornell University, was fined for his adventurous creation.

2.) Melissa

Melissa, created and named (after a bar dancer) by David L Smith, was reported in 1999. The virus was attached along with emails which had a message: “Here is that document you asked for, don’t show it to anybody else.” As soon as it got activated, it sends the same to the top 50 people in the contacts list. It caused a heavy damage in the industry and it lead to the shutting down of email gateways of companies like Intel Corp., Alcatel Lucent, Microsoft .etc

3.) Love letter

The virus that broke the heart of (and robbed people of) millions! It was an email with a subject “I LOVE YOU” which had an attachment LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs. The users didn’t know that it was a Visual Basic Script because the extension was hidden. The virus copied itself to all the addresses in the Windows address book with the user’s sender address. It also brought malicious changes to the user’s system. The most expensive love letter in the world which caused a damage of $ 10 billion.

4.) The Klez Virus

The Klez virus was also capable of self replication and spoofing like the other worms. In addition to that, it disabled the anti-virus software and made the system vulnerable to other malicious attacks. The other advantage of the worm was that it could act as a normal virus, worm or a Trojan depending on its versions. But just because it existed in the past doesn’t mean it’s not coming back. Hackers are working on this little menace to make it more malicious, so don’t say we didn’t warn you.

5.) Code Red

The Code Red worm, released on 13th July, 2001, attacked Microsoft’s IIS web servers

The worm sneaked through the server through a patch in the indexing software with IIS. It used the buffer overflow technique (a long string of repeated character ‘N’ was used to overflow a buffer). A fix was found in a month’s time which limited the damage to $2.5 billion! A similar worm was released 2 weeks after Code Red and they named it as Code Red II.

6.) Nimda

The worm, also a file infector, spread through out the world in 22 minutes. The reason why Nimda was more effective than others was because it used different methods for propagation. It not only used emails but also open network shares, backdoor left by other viruses etc. Nimda spelled backwards is “Admin”! Damage caused by Nimda : $ 635 million!

7.) SQL Slammer

Don’t be fooled by the name, this slammer does not use any SQL commands but on the contrary, it actually exploits the vulnerability in the Microsoft SQL servers and uses the buffer overflow bug to slow down the servers. The worst part of it is that it causes DoS attacks (Denial of Service) and also slows down the entire Internet. Up to date, around 200,000 systems have been affected by this worm.

8.) MS Blaster

Blaster came to existence in August, 2003 and it began to crack the Windows Operating Systems. Also, it targeted the windowsupdate.com site with DoS attacks which resulted in multiple restarts in machines running Windows NT, XP (64 bit) and Windows 2003. Companies and organizations like the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, BMW AG, Philadelphia’s City Hall, and thousands of home and corporate users were blasted by the Blaster!

9.) MyDoom

MyDoom, also known as W32.MyDoom@mm, Novarg, Mimail.R and Shimgapi, attacks systems with Microsoft Windows. The fastest spreading email worm ever, appears with a text message, “andy; I’m just doing my job, nothing personal, sorry,”. There are 2 versions of MyDoom worms: MyDoom.A and MyDoom.B. Both the versions attack through backdoor. Additional feature of MyDoom.B to block Microsoft website and to block HTTP access to other anti-virus websites make it extremely dangerous worm.

10.) Witty

Witty worm was released in March, 2004. It attacks firewall and other security products of Internet Security Systems (ISS) – now IBM Internet Security System. It got the name witty because of the message “(^.^) insert witty message here (^.^)” which was attached with the worm. The cute little ‘Witty’ worm infected 12000 computers in 30 minutes and generated 90 Gbps of UDP traffic.

Related posts:

Website Hosting)

How well do you know your computer? Are you able to tell when it is processing information by the sound that it makes? Are you able to predict how long the hard drive light is going to flash when you press a certain button? If you are, then that means that you have a pretty good rapport with your system. This is pretty normal. When you use any tool, such as a hammer, long enough, you are able to tell some of the quirks and tendencies that go along with it. This is the same for people who use their computer for a long amount of time. They are able to tell when something is wrong with it. It might be that the program took too long to start up. Or that the document is taking too long to close. No matter what it is, you can tell that something is off with your computer, even if you are not a technician.

If a computer is acting funnier than normal, you should really use an anti virus program to check and see if anything has been able to get into it. A person that is more experienced with being able to tell if a virus has infected a computer or not, would be able to get a good ideal about the problem through reading certain signs. But if you are the average computer user, then you might not be able to tell exactly what’s wrong. You will just have a feeling that something is off. Running an anti virus check on your computer will help you put aside these fears. You may have the misconception that all viruses will cause major damage to your system if it is infected. This is only the case with some infections. Others will sit there and quietly gather information about you. After a set amount of time, it will then release that information to the person who created the malware. From there, they might sell your information to criminal organizations or use it themselves.

There are a couple of different ways that you can tell if something may be running, without your knowledge, on the computer. This doesn’t mean that it is a virus, but if they show any of these signs, make sure that you run an anti virus just to double check. The first sign is that your Internet/Network data transfer light may be flickering rapidly. If you are not using the browser or any other kind of Internet related program and your light is moving rapidly, then something may be wrong. Again, double check to see if there are any other programs that you have been running. If they are not, then you should run a scan. Another sign that something may be wrong, is if you just started up your computer, and it seems to still lag after everything is loaded. When you have loaded all of the start up programs, the computer should run with no problems. If it is lagging, then there might be a problem. Again, this is another good case to scan your computer with an anti virus.

If you have even the slightest concern that your computer has become infected, then you should check it with an anti virus right away. There is no reason not to. If there is something that is lingering in the background and gathering information, you won’t know about it until it is too late. Also, before you check for this virus, make sure that your anti virus is updated. You do not want a new virus to be able to slip through the cracks.

No related posts.

Original: Website Hosting)

As an online business owner, the security of your website should be at the top of your priority list. Web hosting security is a field that is constantly evolving, with new threats developing every day. Just as you work hard on a daily basis to improve the quality of your website, hackers work just as diligently to circumvent the security measures put in place by your web hosting service provider. The detrimental effects of compromised security can range from minor to major. You may simply experience a short downtime/data loss, or you may even be the victim of fraud. One of the worst scenarios that occurs regularly is when a webmaster is blamed for fraud due to their website being hacked.

When the security of your website is compromised and an intruder gains access to your administrative interface, there is often no way for the defrauded client to distinguish between the actions of you and the hacker. This can result in the loss of your website, your business, lawsuits, and in some cases even unjustified incarceration!

Fighting an Infinite Yet Invisible Threat

When you think of a hacker, you probably envision a young kid sitting in his mother’s basement typing extremely fast, trying to hack into databases manually. Unfortunately, this is not how hacking works in reality. Real hackers do not do tons of work manually, they use networks of “drones” to do their dirty work for them. These drones are personal computers that have been “hi-jacked” and are being used to carry out small individual tasks that ultimately compromise the security of a server or a network of servers. A single hacker can have as many as 20,000 drones, or more, carrying out pre-set functions at any time. In fact, your personal computer at home may be a drone! If your computer’s RAM is being consumed by a hidden application or “virus” then there is a small chance that your computer’s resources are being used by a hacker!

Resistant Viruses

Online viruses are similar to biological viruses, as they are constantly mutating and becoming stronger and more resistant to treatment. To prevent your personal computer from becoming the victim of a new virus, it is important to keep your anti-virus software updated. Choosing a web hosting company that updates their security measures regularly will prevent your website from becoming a victim as well. This bring us to our next segment.

Security Capabilities of Your Hosting Provider

If you are like 90 percent of webmasters, then chances are your website is hosted by a third-party hosting service. It is important to realize that many of these hosting companies are losing employees regularly due to the falling economy, and simply do not have the resources necessary to combat the ever-growing security threats in modern cyber-space. Since the security of your website is in the hands of a third-party company, it is important to make the necessary inquiries regarding their manpower, server capabilities and support staff. Choosing a cheap web host is not recommended for a serious online business owner.

An Example of a Serious Security Threat

Some hackers engage in the practice of “click stealing.” Click stealing is when a hacker places a redirect link over a button on your website, causing the information to be secretly sent to a third-party website. This is especially dangerous when the information is private financial information. An example would be an order form submit button. The hacker “steals” the click from the submit button, and the information is redirected to a phony web page that mimics the check out page of your website. This is a serious threat, and if you are using a third-party host it is important to make sure they are aware of this.

Resentful Employees

If you run a large online business, with tech savvy employees, it is important to change your site’s passwords and security configuration every time you fire an employee. Some employee’s may attempt to seek revenge if they are resentful towards your decision to terminate them.

Related posts:

Security becomes more of a challenge everyday for website owners and administrators. If it isn’t someone trying to deface your homepage and enrage your audience, it is another looking to commit more heinous acts such as stealing sensitive information or putting your identity in jeopardy. In order to keep yourself protected, it is a must that you stay aware of the emerging threats. Here are a few stirring up some of the most trouble in 2009.

Zombie Armies

Although zombie armies and DDoS attacks on large servers and networks is nothing new, this combined threat continues to be a major problem. Security experts are projecting that the issue will likely worsen as computer systems increasingly rely on wireless connections to the internet. Therefore, while this threat has been around for sometime, you should never get too relaxed and think your website or server is immune to exploitation. On a good note, there are a few methods you have at your disposal that have proven to effectively combat an attack should the enslaved army of computers come your way.

Click Jacking

Another security threat on the rise, click jacking is pretty much what it sounds like: the act of hijacking a click. A perfect example would be an intruder replacing the form button on your site with a button of their own. Doesn’t sound all that menacing? However, consider this – a new customer goes to enter their credit card information via the form on your website. When clicking the button, the user is redirected to a rogue site where they are prompted to enter their financial details. If they happen to fall for this trick, the customer could be out of their funds and you could possibly be out of business for allowing it to happen. Click jacking can be very difficult to detect as the visitor could end up on the fraudulent site without even realizing they have left your domain. Difficulty aside, this is one threat you need to learn how to prevent as it is becoming widespread at a disturbing rate.

Advanced Virus Strains

A number of security reports are showing that virus programs are growing more sophisticated and difficult to detect. Easy access to malicious tools have enabled code writers to create viruses that elude scanners, allowing them to do so with less skills and less effort. These findings give indication that more advanced virus scanning solutions are warranted. Experts are hinting that systems of the very near future may do away with the today’s signature-based scanning in favor of techniques such as application whitelisting or application heuristics. These methods could end up being integral parts of your virus defense mechanisms.

The clan of internet criminals are working overtime to wreak havoc in the year 2009 and beyond. What we have listed in this article are just a few of numerous threats you need to be aware of. In order to ensure an adequate level of protection, we recommend getting together with your administrator or hosting provider to discuss the areas and security issues that concern you the most.

Related posts:

<a
