Above all, blogs need to be interesting to read and convey a message which is unique. Your opinion is unique. Blog writing should be kept on a personal level about your opinions and your experiences. The human aspect of blogs is what makes them stand out from what else is available on the web.
You are an author who can write what ever you want (within reason obviously) and can convey it in your own unique way. Inject your personality into your writing and don’t be afraid of letting your true opinions come out, even if they may be against the grain. You may even find that you get some readers who keep coming back for more simply because they completely disagree with your views or tastes!
Other factors also can make a blog successful. The blog does need to be informative, and the best way you can do this is by researching what you are writing about. Your blog should also be about something you have an interest in anyway, or are actively involved in. Writing about something you know nothing about will make life really difficult and could make it extremely boring too. Be an authority on your subject and try to give something unique that people are unable to find elsewhere. Uniqueness not only keeps people reading and coming back, it will also do you wonders when it comes to getting found in search engine results.
Involving readers can also keep people interested and keep them coming back for more. If someone adds a comment, you can start a discussion and share views and this could be incorporated into your new posts.
Another important aspect to remember is that readers might get bored with your blog if it appears to have similar content and follows a predictable pattern. Change the format, change your writing style, change your color scheme. Make regular readers double take and get them thinking, wow this blog is alive! Many blogs simply look like clones of others and make people just head somewhere else. Give your blog character and make it stand out above the rest.
